What to Expect on Your First Gravel Ride
If you've never ridden gravel before, the first ride can feel bigger than the miles on paper. That's normal. The whole point of More Than Miles™ is to make the first ride feel like a welcome, not a test.
Here's what a first ride with the cohort actually looks like: we meet at Trek Bicycle Shawnee (10412 Shawnee Mission Pkwy) about 20 minutes before rolling. We do a pre-ride check-in — bike, tires, water, snacks, how you're feeling that day. Nervous is welcome. Slow is welcome.
What to wear: any padded cycling shorts you're comfortable in, a jersey or breathable shirt, sunglasses, and a helmet. You do not need a kit. You do not need clip-in shoes.
What to bring: a bike that fits (Trek Shawnee will help you sort this out), two water bottles or a hydration pack, a spare tube, and simple snacks. If you don't have some of this yet, tell us — we'll figure it out together.
During the ride, we ride as a group. Nobody gets dropped. A USA Cycling Level 3 certified coach is on every ride, and program leadership carries American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED certification. Community before competition is a real promise, not a slogan.
The one thing to expect: you'll surprise yourself. Riders in the pilot cohort routinely finish their first gravel ride saying, 'I didn't know I could do that.' That's the goal.
